A powerful form of Internet communication is the Instant Messenger (IM). The Instant Messenger is a small type of program that instantly connects you to friends and family who are on the Internet. When opened, this program allows you to see which of your contacts are currently online and which of them are not. You select an online recipient from your contact list and type your greeting or message. Your recipient will get the message instantly and can reply in the same fashion. If your recipient is not online the message will be sent as an email or automatically 'pop up' when they do go online.
The people on your contact list will also need to have the same IM program installed. If you and your preferred contacts do not all use the same IM program, and you do not wish to install and run several different IM programs, you can search for a Universal Instant Messenger.
You will have to check with your supervisors at your site to see if chatting
is allowed, but we find Instant Messaging to be a valuable tool in communicating
with our Interns. Still, Instant Messaging / Internet Chat is probably the most
abused Internet privilege of all time. Therefore, we have implemented some strict
rules about its use. We use MSN Messenger.
Interns must create a new
hotmail account (or other .net passport account) for this purpose. The exception
would be if they already have a hotmail account that is used for work purposes
only. When they set up MSN Messenger,
they must set their display name to the equivalent of "Joe Smith - Littleville
CAP". Their contact list will be strictly limited to other people involved
in CAP. Supervisors should pay attention to the contact list and the Intern's
use of Messenger. Interns may not use this same MSN account for personal
use, even after work hours. Here are a couple example screenshots:
Well MSN Messenger gives you lots of communication options. Not only can you see when your friends are online, but you can instantly send and receive messages, files, start a voice conversation, open Netmeeting, and browse the Internet together.

For those of you who crave more control over your MSN Messenger, there is advanced third party software that provides additional functionality to Messenger. It's called Messenger Plus, and while their primary website is down, the software is still available either at SoftNews or at Mirror 1. Some of the advanced features that are available are: the ability to turn off the add-banner, chat logging, quick privacy hotkey, and advanced preferences.
